Caring with Compassion

Compassionate Debriefing

In addition to patient interactions, compassionate communication can apply to colleagues and supervisors, including in peer review and other debriefing venues.

Debriefing opportunities may be immediate, delayed, as needed or routine. They are one way to address compassionate communication for all.

Low-impact debriefing involves:

  • Fair warning before sharing
  • Consent from the listener
  • Low-impact disclosure, sharing the least amount of sensitive information that is necessary

Reflection

How do you feel debriefing can be improved at your organization?

Should it be only for critical incidents, or be more inclusive of other cases that impact each of us differently?
