Compassion Tree   Education and Conversation

Compassion and Empathy

Compassion is a desire to help someone who is suffering, viewing the circumstance from your point of view.

Empathy is sharing an emotional state, such as suffering, with another, viewing the circumstance from their point of view.

Having compassion and empathy causes neurobiological changes that foster feelings of social connection. We have evolved for this, and many studies have shown compassion and empathy combat feelings of burnout.

We may feel compassion in both our work relationships and work-related communications.

Relationships
  • With patients

  • With families

  • With alleged perpetrators

  • In the work environment

  • In work undertakings

  • In the community

  • With ourselves
Communications
  • With patients and families

  • With colleagues

  • In the courtroom

  • With the media

  • Self-talk

Reflection

Can you recall feeling particularly compassionate in a recent work-related relationship or communication?
