CHAMP Residency Training Program Process

The CHAMP Residency Training Program offers the option of taking a residency route to become a CHAMP Network Member of child sexual abuse evaluations. It combines a child abuse rotation with a CHAMP Mentor and the successful completion of the Evaluating Child Sexual Abuse coursework. In order to access this option you must complete the following steps:

  1. When you start your child abuse rotation with a CHAMP Mentor, go to https://www.champprogram.com/courses.asp and create a CHAMP coursework account. There is no fee to create this account that gives you access to all of the CHAMP online coursework, which is also free.

  2. After you have created your account, register for the Evaluating Child Sexual Abuse course. You must successfully complete this course by passing the multiple-choice test with a minimum score of 80% for both Test Part A and Test Part B. These tests are embedded in the coursework. Test Part A can be taken after you complete Sections I and II. Test Part B can be taken after you complete Sections III and IV. You may retake a test if you do not achieve a passing score.

  3. Although you are not required to take the other three courses offered on the CHAMP website, consider taking them. These courses are much shorter and have a short quiz at the end of the course that provides immediate access to the correct answers.

  4. As part of your rotation you must log a minimum of 15 hours related to child sexual abuse cases with your CHAMP Mentor/Attending.

  5. During your rotation you are invited to attend CHAMP Case Reviews and webcasts. These webcasts provide research-based information about child abuse.

  6. When you have successfully completed your rotation, your CHAMP Mentor will complete an evaluation of your rotation. You must also complete a CHAMP evaluation of your rotation. These two evaluations must be sent to JoAnne Race, CHAMP Program Manager, champ@upstate.edu .

  7. After JoAnne receives the necessary paperwork, she will send you a CHAMP Residency Training Program Certificate of Completion and add your name to the list of residents who have successfully completed the program.

  8. Then, after you complete your residency and are doing child sexual abuse evaluations in the state of New York, you can apply to be a CHAMP Network Member. This application will require that you send three child sexual abuse cases to be reviewed by CHAMP experts. There will be no cost for this review.
